OUTSTANDING BOOKS

A recommendation list of outstanding books with their corresponding reviews, made by Robert Reyes

100 Manga Artists, Julius Wiedemann, Editor
TASCHEN, Bibliotheca Universalis
I bought this book in late 2017 as a gift to myself and to my nascent career as an illustrator and it soon became one of the most inspiring and psychoactive books in my life. This gorgeous Taschen edition (an updated version of Manga Design) delivers a unique and impactful landscape in the manga world. From legendary creators like Ozamu Tezuka and Rumiko Takahashi to contemporary graphic masters (I would say that my love of the work of Junji Ito was ignited by this gem of a book). If you happen to be a fan of alternative culture and a lover of storytelling this book should be on your shelf. 100 Manga Artists is one of those oracle books that connect you with sources of inspiration that stay with you forever.

Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century, Greil Marcus
Belknap Press/Harvard University Press
Greil Marcus’ Lipstick Traces was my favorite read from 2012. It consolidated some of my earlier interests on the concept of psychogeography and its relationship with underground culture. Published in 1989, this book is a tour de force documenting major cultural undercurrents related to freedom of expression and creativity, focusing on the Gnostics, the Situationists, and the Punk movement. Greil Marcus (who has been a Pitchfork contributor) writes both as an art journalist and as a social commentator who delivers a crisp prose that delights the reader's spirit of curiosity. I would say that is authenticity what Marcus documents as a cultural conversation between so disparate creative manifestations spanning several centuries. He chronicles the impact of The Sex Pistols on pop culture along with the development of the Punk movement worldwide as a witness himself of this cultural rejection of conformity that manifests itself in creativity and the pursuit of self-expression. The book is incredibly well written and insightful.
